There was no overlooking this sunflower. Framed by a rich, earthy backdrop, its brilliant golden petals seemed to demand attention, proving that sometimes a single bloom can outshine an entire field. I photographed it at Hanson Prairie Preserve near Winterset, Iowa, a 30-acre remnant of native tallgrass prairie that offers a beautiful glimpse into the landscape that once covered much of the Midwest.
